About the
House System -
How it started and who are the teams?
At the beginning of the 2001-2002 school year, the children were told about the
idea of having 'houses' or 'teams' or 'families' at school.
They were asked if they would like to be a captain of one of these 'houses' and
three sixth grade students volunteered.
Elections were then held for the vice-captain positions, and every child in the
school voted.
Next, the Teachers and Captains had a meeting in which the captains got to pick
students from their team. They had to choose boys and girls from each grade
level.
Once the teams were decided, we informed the students.
The following day we had our first 'house meeting' in which a team name was
decided upon, a color, as well as a motto, and the children started working on a
logo. (Each of the teams will have their own team T-Shirts)
The students participated in competitions against each other in sports such as
soccer, basketball, baseball and running races. They also were able to challenge
the other teams in other games and activities - The limit being only that of the
imaginations of the students.
We also had academic challenges such as math games, spelling, reading,
etc.
Dr.
Hall was able to devise many sporting challenges called "Tabloids of Sports"
where the students were challenged in many different ways - running, jumping,
skipping, throwing, kicking etc.
The house system is designed to promote healthy competition. It encourages
students to succeed with the support of their team members.
