Old School News

October 4, 2001

Dear Montebello Parents:

On October 17 it will be the 12th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake. Using this date as a reminder to be prepared for emergency situations, Montebello Elementary School has designated the month of October as Safety Preparedness Month.

This month the school will be conducting severe weather, fire and earthquake drills. As part of our drills we will be instructing the children as to what they are to do and where they are to go in the event an emergency situation occurs.

The school will also be preparing for procedures to follow in the event we have a bomb threat or if aggressive individuals are on our school premises. While we have no reason to suspect either situation will occur, it is best to err on the side of safety. One or more of our faculty and staff have received first-aide training and are CPR qualified. Earlier this month, Mr. Heaton’s grade 5 and 6 class received a short course in first-aide.

The Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) has estimated that up to 1600 roads and highways will be closed following future major Bay Area earthquakes. Unless adequate preparations are made in advance, natural disasters are only compounded.

Montebello Elementary School has stockpiled food, water, blankets, first-aide supplies, etc., to last 2-3 days. The parents’ responsibility is to ensure each child’s emergency form is current and accurate. It is also just as important that parents take personal responsibility for being able to “Ride out Future Earthquakes.”

To assist you with this endeavor, I have attached information sent to me by ABAG that will give you guidelines and suggestions to best prepare you and your family for any natural disaster that may occur. The results of the State of California Standardized Testing and Reporting

The results of the State of California Standardized Testing and Reporting Program (STAR) will soon be mailed home. If the STAR scores and information contained in this mailing are not clear, your child’s teacher will clarify any questions you may have during parent conference time. If your questions cannot wait until parent conference time, please contact me.

Future Dates to record:

October 10: Grade 2/3/4 Field Trip to the Oakland Museum
October 24-27: Grade 5/6 San Diego Field Trips
October 25: Grades K-3 Field Trip to the Pumpkin Patch
October 31: Halloween Party
November 7, 8 and 9: Report Period and Parent Conferences
November 15: Learning to Learn Seminar for Parents – 7:00 PM

Sincerely,

Parents, please do not forget the Back-to-School-Night program this Thursday, September 27, 2001. The program will begin promptly at 7:00 PM.

After a brief welcome and introductions parent s will adjourn to their child's room where the teacher will review the year's curriculum, programs and what is expected of each child. Time will be given for the teacher to answer questions parents may have.

As time is limited, please do not ask questions specific to your child's progress. If a conference is needed, please schedule this with the teacher.

Montebello Elementary School inaugurated a Student Body Council last week. The school's newly elected student body officers are Stacey Taylor,President; Emily Reynaga, Vice President; Isabel Saldana, Secretary; and Andrew Tinsley, Treasurer. The fourth grade representatives elected to the Student Body Council are Taylor Karl and Jessica Gasperini.

A new tradition has begun at Montebello Elementary School. Under the direction of Mr. Heaton, and assisted by Mrs. Zaccheo and Ms. Mills, a House Program has been organized. The House Captains are Greg Epremian, Andrew Tinsley and Elizabeth Naumann . The Vice captains are Roberto Fuentes, Robert Hartwig and Emily Reynaga.

Congratulations are in order for the elected Student Body Council officers and House leaders.

A debt of gratitude is in order for Roberto Fuentes. He has been appointed to the position ball monitor. As the ball monitor, Roberto has the responsibility for seeing that all athletic equipment is returned. Recently, while assisting Mr. Ertel, Roberto helped retrieve 20 balls that had gone over the fence.

Do not forget to put a note on your calendar for school pictures. They will be taken October 3.
